DAY 1: Individual Combat

Space weaponry takes many forms, so does our weapons seminar. Learn Luke-Style single combat (swords) & Maul-Style combat (Staff). We’ll cover the basic movements and some tricks like spinning, tossing, & behind the back catching weaponry.

DAY 2: Partner Combat
11:00 AM - 3:00 PM

11:00 AM: Character Creation
We’ll provide some dialogue fitting of long ago in a galaxy far, far away to practice character analysis and motivations through some acting scene work. You’ll select your partner, scene, and weapon! (Cosplay is welcome.)
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Hit play on ‘Dual of the Fates’ because it’s time to fight! We’ll take your character, scene, and weapon and help you develop fight choreo to match.
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Time to film! We’ll record your scene in high def (with royalty free music so you can use it later) and share it with you to add to your reel, post on socials, or just show off at holiday parties for years to come

Shawn is a proud Filipino American ADR Director and Voiceover Artist for Crunchyroll who has voiced roles in My Hero Academia, Dragon Ball Super, Attack on Titan, One Piece, Fruits Basket, Ranking of Kings, Radiant, Ensemble Stars, and many others. His ADR Director credits include work on How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom, Requiem of the Rose King, Shadows House, Sakura Quest, Radiant, Appare Ranman, Horimiya, Ikebukuro West Gate Park, Our Last Crusade, and Fruits Basket. He has also been featured in several video games: Most notably, for Gear Box Software's Borderlands 3 and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands as well as Bandai Namco’s Tales of Luminaria. For most of his career, Shawn has been a theatre maker in Dallas-Fort Worth that has performed on most major stages, started several companies, and has been a producing board/company member with many others; he has also toured Nationally and Internationally as an actor which includes performing in Scotland’s 2019 Festival Fringe in Edinburgh.

Cloak & Sword Workshop

DFW's best stage combat choreographers, Modus Martial Arts, are back with a NEW and UNIQUE combat workshop: Cloak & Sword. (That's right, the geniuses behind our Romeo & Juliet choreography who have also worked with Dallas Theater Center, Fort Worth Opera, and more)

Cloak and Sword combat can be applied to stage and film: Vikings, knights, gladiators, and more can wield a sword and cape. Bring your ACOTAR, Lord of the Rings, and Jedi dreams to life on stage.

Maybe you want to boost your resume or maybe you just wanna boost your Ren Faire game. Either way this workshop is going to be EPIC.

This workshop will teach you how to make acting choices that incorporate wearable props and weaponry, cover a two-person fight sequence that will be filmed and given to you (for free), and some new sword skills like striking!

Ever dreamed of taking steps to master classical dueling (á la Shakespeare, Cervantes, or Rostand) but too daunted by competitive fencing to start? Build a classical stage swordsmanship you can be proud of!

Stage swordsman Bobby Garcia of Modus Martial Arts will helm this course by sharpening participants’ rapport with Renaissance Rapiers. Errol Flynn, eat your heart out!

Presenter Bio:

Meg Sullivan graduated from Baylor University with her BFA in Theatre Performance with emphases in Directing, and Marketing for the arts. She then received her Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance at Arizona State University. She is an educator, actor, & director who is passionate about theatre & its ability to teach humility, empathy, compassion, & leadership. She is a Resident Director & Grant Writer at Genesis Children's Theatre, Artistic Director of Three Strands Theatre, & a Shakespearean drama teacher at The Covenant School of Dallas. At Three Strands, she also teaches Corporate Improv classes which trains leaders in a hands-on, out-of-the-box way to break up patterns, encourage creativity, and motivate creative solutions.

Her favorite acting roles have included Witch 1 (Macbeth), Helena (A Midsummer Night's Dream), The Baker’s Wife (Into the Woods), Cunningham (The Last Days of Judas Iscariot), & Lotty Wilton (Enchanted April). A few of her favorite directing projects have included “Urinetown: The Musical,” “Macbeth,” “The Tempest,” and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" at Genesis Children’s Theatre.

Courtney Mentzel (she/her/hers) is an actor, puppeteer, casting director, producer, and avid collaborator currently based in New York City. Some of her recent projects include the short film, Call Me Grizby, the podcast, Stella Maris, An Entertainment, and Warners Brother's production of The Polar Express in Whippany, NJ. She is the Casting Director and serves on the Board of Directors for Plague Mask Players. Prior to moving to NYC, Courtney had the pleasure of working regionally in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas with Undermain Theatre, The Classics Theatre Project, Prism Movement Theatre, and Hip Pocket Theatre. Currently, she is developing a Power Rangers inspired web series and helping other artists in her community pursue their passions. Let's Workshop A Play!

High School Workshop:
LET'S WORKSHOP A SHOW!

Ages: Going into 9th - 12th grade

Join a professional director, playwright, and adult actors to workshop a real children's theater play. The play is a stage adaptation of the famous children's book series "Falcon Quinn". Your child could ORIGINATE a role-meaning they are the very first to get to perform it! Not only is that great for their resume-ITS SUPER FUN! The rehearsals will culminate in a staged reading performance of the script with a cast of both student and professional actors for an audience. Your kids will even get input on the development of the script. They'll be able to provide feedback directly to the writer as we edit the script during the workshop phase. (Just like Broadway workshops, this is a very unique process that is enviable for actors to get to be a part of-no matter what age!) The story is Harry Potter meets Percy Jackson meets monsters!

Tuition: $115 

Rehearsals: 6pm - 9 pm, 2-3 weeknights a week from June 6-17th. Dates can be discussed based on availability of performers.

⁃ A two-person sequence teaching the basics of knife versus knife fighting

Presenter Bios:

McKenzie Ramirez Harris is a Registered Dietitian specializing in the treatment of eating disorders, emotional eating, unhealthy relationships with food and exercise, and other disordered eating patterns. McKenzie believes in a Health at Every Size Approach and considers her an “anti-diet” dietitian, so if you’re fed up with diets, she’s your girl! Her approach stems from the philosophy that “all foods fit”- meaning that all foods fit in balance, variety, and moderation. McKenzie enjoys treating adolescent, adults, and families wanting to improve their relationship with food and their bodies. McKenzie aims to create a safe place for people of any body shape, size, color, and sexual orientation.

McKenzie graduated from the best university in the world, Texas A&M University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Sciences and Dietetics. She also completed a clinical dietetic internship through Texas A&M (meaning that she bleeds maroon - WHOOP!). McKenzie’s passion for treating eating disorders stems from her extensive experience at various levels of care, including: Residential, Partial Hospitalization, Intensive Outpatient, and Outpatient levels of care. McKenzie strives to set loving structure for her clients to decrease incidence of higher level of care. McKenzie’s mission as a clinician is to provide professional, warm, compassionate individualized nutrition therapy to help her clients rebuild and nurture a healthy relationship with food.

Anne Jensen-Smith (she/her) is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) specializing in the treatment of eating disorders, trauma, PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Utilizing therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and a little bit of humor, Anne works to connect with her clients while working towards increasing the client's ability to cope through distressing emotions, while decreasing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and trauma.At Dallas Counseling and Treatment Center in Plano, Anne works with teens and adults of all genders, sexuality, race, SES, and neurotypes to just... feel better. Anne completed her undergrad at California State University, Northridge, and her Master's degree at Texas Woman's University.Anne attributes her background in acting, story producing, and producing to her ability to connect with each individual's story. After spending about 18 years in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles, Anne is happy to be nowhere near the bright lights and cameras. Anne lives a quiet life with her partner and two children.

Hand-to-Hand Stage Combat Workshop

Do you watch Marvel movies and wish you could fight like that? Do you aspire to be a John Wick-level badass? Or do you really love kickboxing, martial arts, and any type of fighting style for exercise? Then come and kill two birds with one stone! You can learn how to fight like an action star AND get your daily movement in. This workshop will help you for stage and film style fighting. Even if you haven’t spent a day in your life learning to fight, you will be sure to have fun.

On Saturday, December 11th, Plague Mask Players is offering Hand-to-Hand Stage Combat Workshop, a 3-hour in-person workshop taught by Seth Monhollon! The workshop will walk participants through the standard hand combat followed by the teaching of a choreographed fight (to a scene from John Wick!). After spending time polishing these fights, our fighters will get their final fight performance filmed and sent to them.

Musical Theater Intensive: Perform with the Pros!

Students will be cast in famous musical selections from shows like Fiddler On the Roof, Newsies, Matilda, and more! This fast & fun class will culminate in the performance of a musical theater review alongside professional DFW actors. All proceeds from the performance will go towards a summer 2022 production at POPCS in collaboration with Plague Mask Players, and summer camp students. (more info coming spring 2022!) Come learn to sing and act like a Broadway pro!

Instructor Bios:

Samantha Calatozzo Cobb, MBA- Samantha is a professional actor and director who has performed across the country. She has a BFA in Theater and a MBA in marketing. She has been teaching K-college aged students for the past 8 years. She has taught at Nashville Children’s Theater, Prince of Peace Christian School, and has led numerous VBS programs, acting camps, and theatrical workshops for schools. Samantha has directed over 30 children’s musical productions. She has a passion for children’s education and grew up sitting on her mother’s piano bench while she directed her own children’s theater productions.

Jami Calatozzo-Jami has been working professionally in the Dallas area for over twenty years as a musical director, pianist, accompanist, teacher and vocal coach. She has a masters in music from SMU and has worked for the Dallas Theatre Center, Southern Methodist University, Newman Smith High School, Genesis Children's Theater, Plano Senior High School, Dallas Baptist University, Plano Children’s Theatre, Dallas Children's Theatre, and many area schools as a musical director and vocal coach with students ages K-Graduate Programs. Jami is currently the Middle School & High School Choir Director, the Middle School & High School Musical Director, and K-5 Afterschool Drama teacher at Prince of Peace Christian School. In her career, she has directed over 200 children’s musicals.

Teacher’s Bio:

Shawn is a proud Filipino-American who has voiced anime roles in My Hero Academia, Dragon Ball Super, Attack on Titan, One Piece, Fruits Basket, Radiant, Ensemble Stars, and many others; also, he has ADR directed for Sakura Quest, Radiant, Appare Ranman, Horimiya, and Fruits Basket. Currently, he cast and is helming Funimation's How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom which is in simulcast with Japan.

In 2019, he was featured in Gearbox Software's Borderlands 3 as mini-bosses, Archimedes and Judge Hightower. In 2021, he took on further roles in the yet-to-be released Tiny Tina's Wonderlands (Gear Box Software) and the Tales Of franchise (Bandai Namco). Through his career, Shawn has done VO for live-action films, narrated books, poems, industrials, instructional material, trailers, and various other mediums; however, anime and video games are his primary focus.
Using his connections in the arts community, he partnered with Funimation to help with diversity, equity, and inclusivity casting for their talent log. This initiative has created excitement for performers and fans all over as the medium offers more representation and opportunities. Almost all of his artistic work centers on outreach of this nature (see Altered Shakespeare in our local theatrical community).
Outside of VO, Shawn recently wrapped filming for Amazon's The Dark Places and Firelight Entertainment's synchronized A Midsummer Night's Dream. For most of his career, he has been a theatre maker in Dallas-Fort Worth that has performed on most major stages, started several companies, and has been a producing board/company member with many others; he has also toured Nationally and Internationally as an actor which includes performing in Scotland’s 2019 Festival Fringe in Edinburgh (preparations are being made for a 2022 return to the festival as well as an Off-Broadway run of shows).

Stage Combat Workshop

On Saturday, August 7th, Plague Mask Players is offering Single Sword Stage Combat, a 3-hour in-person workshop taught by Seth Monhollon! The workshop will walk participants through the standard sword positions followed by the teaching of a choreographed fight (to a scene from Shakespeare’s Star Wars!). After spending time polishing these fights, our fighters will get their final fight performance filmed and sent to them. This workshop will also be great practice for those wanting to take the SAFD certification test!
